Assembling an estate and legacy plan can be one of the most satisfying and calming feelings in the world. The first step is convincing ourselves we need a plan sooner rather than later. This is our way to plan for the unexpected and be confident that there is some order in the chaos of life. There are many people who think that since they don’t have children, or don’t have many assets, no plan is necessary. Though an understandable thought, this is a mindset that we need to work on changing. We all have affairs that will need to be sorted out once we pass away.We all have affairs now we need to put into order for while we’re alive. Building an estate plan not only helps us figure out our plans and legacies while we are alive, it makes things easier for our survivors, giving them direction when they may not know whereto begin. The second step is to seek out guidance for crafting our legacies and estates. Estate and legacy planning can be tricky waters to navigate. Having a guiding hand can make all the difference between unnecessary, stress filled, bumpy road mayhem, and a smooth, enjoyable, planning process. We need to identify our level of comfort with planning, pinpoint our goals in creating a plan and what legacies we wish to leave behind, prioritize our points, choose our beneficiaries and executors, and protect those we care about. Estate and legacy plans are key in pre-assigning gifts, equalizing beneficiaries, identifying what will happen to our assets, setting our what memories we instill in those we leave behind, and naming executors who we know will take care of our wishes and see things through. The greatest gift of all is peace of mind in knowing there is a plan.
